ARA Joins Coalition Letter Urging EPA Administrator Zeldin Fix RMP Rules

Jan 30 2025

ARA joined an industry coalition letter addressed to Lee Zeldin, the newly confirmed Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It congratulates him on his confirmation and requests a meeting to discuss the need for immediate rulemaking to amend the 2024 Safer Communities by Chemical Accident Prevention: Risk Management Program (RMP) Rule.

The letter argues that the 2024 rule imposes misguided and illegal requirements that do not enhance facility safety and will result in significant costs for the industry. The letter also highlights the history of the RMP, noting its success in reducing chemical accidents since its inception in 1992, and describes the regulatory instability since 2017 due to changes by successive administrations.

The letter expresses concern over the EPA's Risk Management Public Data Tool, which makes sensitive chemical information publicly accessible, posing security risks. ARA and industry coalition partners request EPA remove this tool and the need to discuss specific provisions of the 2024 rule that need correction.

ARA believes in the importance of a stable regulatory environment for the safety and security of U.S. facilities and America’s chemical industry remain globally competitive.
